Citrus Pitching Struggles Against Vaqueros

Glendora, CA (Men’s Basketball) – The Citrus College baseball team continued to struggle Thursday afternoon, as they lost 17-4 to Santa Barbara City College. It was the Owls 4th straight loss this year.

The Fighting Owls never really got into the game, as starter Daniel Sandello gave up 6 runs, all earned, in the top of the 2nd. Jeff Van Gundy came in to relieve Sandello in the 2nd, and cruised for an inning and a 1/3 before giving up 4 runs in the top of the 4th. Just as each Citrus pitcher began to find a groove, Santa Barbara would knock them out of it, as the Owls were forced to use 5 different pitchers in the game.

On the offensive side of the ball, Citrus was able to get 10 hits off the Vaqueros, but they struggled to drive in runs. The Owls stranded 9 runners on base, with the most egregious of innings coming in the bottom of the 7th where the Owls had bases loaded with 2 outs, but failed to drive in a run. The Owls also struggled with plate discipline only drawing 1 walk.

The lone bright spot for Citrus came off the bat of Michael Gonzalez and Javier Lizerraga. Both Gonzalez and Lizerraga were 2 for 4.

With the loss the Fighting Owls fall to 3-10 on the season. Citrus will be at home again Monday as it plays host to Mt. SAC. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
