Extra Innings Win Snaps 10 Game Skid

Glendora, CA (Baseball) – After a couple of close calls over the past two games, the Citrus College baseball team finally snapped its ten game skid with a 4-3 extra innings win over Glendale College Tuesday afternoon.

Tony MancusoThe Fighting Owls put their most reliable started, Thomas Korn on the mound Tuesday, and Korn did not disappoint. Korn pitch 9 strong innings giving up only 6 hits and 2 earned runs.

Citrus struck first in the bottom of the 2nd inning, as Tony Mancuso kicked things off with a double to left-field. After Javier Lizarraga struck-out, AC Grable hit a single up the middle moving Mancuso to third. Dennis Dunn then came to the plate and hit a deep sacrifice fly to center-field giving the Owls a 1 run advantage.

The Vaqueros struck back in the top of the 4th inning when Bryan Jackson led the inning off with a solo shot to right-field knotting the game up at 1. In the bottom of that same inning Lizarraga answered back with a two out solo shot of his own, this time to left-field, and pushing the Citrus lead back up to one at 2-1.

After facing only 6 batters between the 6th and 7th innings, Korn gave up another home-run this time to Glendale’s Brian Bistagne who led the top of the 8th off with another solo-shot this time to left-center. The Fighting Owls would threaten in the bottom of that same inning with runners on the corners and two outs, Mancuso grounded out to end the inning.

With both teams not crossing home in the 9th, the game went to extra innings. Bistagne did exactly what he did in the 8th, by leading off the 10th with another solo-shot to left-field, giving Glendale a 3-2 lead going into the bottom of the 10th.

With two outs and runners on second and third, the Fighting Owls fate seemed up in the air, until Mancuso who was 1 for 4 on the day came to the plate. Mancuso ripped a single up the middle scoring both Jason McClellan and Michael Gonzalez to give Citrus a 4-3 win.

With the win the Fighting Owls improve to 11-26 and 7-13 in WSC play. The Fighting Owls will be on the road Thursday as they travel to Glendale to finish off their regular season series with the Vaqueros. Game time is at 2:30 pm.
