Glendora, CA (Baseball) – Despite a chance to come back in the bottom of the 9th, the Fighting Owls fell to San Bernardino Valley College Tuesday afternoon. The Wolverines were able to score 3 runs in the first two innings to take a lead that Citrus couldn’t overcome in their 4-6 loss.
San Bernardino Valley College hit Thomas Korn early and hard Tuesday afternoon. After the Wolverines kicked the game off with a single to
center field, Robert Nugent hit a home-run to left field to give the Wolverines an earlier two-nothing lead. Nugent would get yet another RBI in the top of the 2nd as he hit a single up the middle, pushing the SBV lead to 3-0.
The Wolverines would score one more run in the top of the 4th before the Fighting Owls would get on the board in the bottom of that very inning. Daniel Sandello led the inning off with a double to right field. The next two Citrus batters would go down in order, before AC Grable stepped up to the plate and drove in Sandello with a single to left-center field.
Citrus would get on the board again the next inning, as the Fighting Owls led off with another double, but this time off the bat of Gabriel Chavez. Two batters later, Chavez would score as the Wolverines short-stop was charged with an error that lead to Chavez crossing home plate.
After giving up four runs in the first four innings Korn, finally settled down getting 6 of the next 8 batters to sit down, and allowing no runs. The flood-gates came open again however; when in the top of the 7th Korn gave up two more runs as Zach Baker hit a homer to right-field pushing the Wolverine lead to 6-2. Matt Cole came in to relieve Korn, and finish out the inning. Cole would finish out the inning and the game only facing 7 batters in the final 6 outs of the game.
With Citrus down by 4 in the bottom of the 9th, the Owls began to make their move with two outs all ready gone by. John Kazarian, who pinch hit for Dennis Dunn, kicked things off by drawing a walk. Adrian Martinez then came in and singled to right center, moving Kazarian to second base. Short-stop Tony Mancuso, then strolled the plate and calmly hit a single to left field loading up the bases for the Fighting Owls.
With left fielder Jason McClellan at the plate, and the bases loaded, SBV catcher Ryan Wager allowed a past ball that scored Kazarian and put runners on 2nd and 3rd. McClellan would eventually draw a walk, and Chris Gomez would come in, pinch-hitting for Manny Martinez. Gomez hit a single up the middle scoring another run, and keeping the bases loaded. Sandello, who was 2 for 4 on the day, popped up to the 2nd baseman to end the threat and the Owls day with a 6-4 loss.
In the loss the Fighting Owls fall to 3-9. The Fighting Owls will be at home again on Thursday as they play host to Santa Barbara. The first pitch will be at 2:00 pm.
