Great Scott

Glendora, CA (Baseball) -- Citrus College freshman designated hitter Scott Vincent went 2 for 3 and drove in 7 RBI’s, one short of the school record, to help lead the Fighting Owls past Glendale College 14-2 on Tuesday afternoon. It was Citrus’ 12th win in 16 games in the friendly confines of their own home field.

While Citrus would be the eventual winner, it was Glendale who looked like they would be the impressive team early on. Glendale took advantage of a two out walk in the top of the second inning when the Vaqueros’ Luis Rivas sent a blast over the outfield fence giving Glendale an early 2-0 lead.

That second inning two-run bomb would be Citrus starter Chris Freedman’s lone hiccup of his five strong innings, but it would be four innings until Freedman would see any run support. After Julio Raymundo got things rolling with a one out single in the bottom of the fourth, Damien Chavez ripped a double that put runners on second and third.

With two runners in scoring position, Vincent picked up his first two RBI’s of the game as he cracked a double that scored Chavez and Raymundo, and tied the game up at 2-2.

Though it would take four innings for the Owls bats to heat up, they would keep it rolling for long thereafter. Citrus grabbed four more runs in the bottom of the fifth, including four RBI’s in a row, one from Raymundo, two from Chavez, and the fourth from a sacrifice fly thanks to Vincent.

After the fifth, Freedman gave way to Aaron Ilharreguy who picked up right where Freedman left off. Illhareguy would pitch four shut-out innings, striking out three batters, and allowing a runner past second base just once.

While they were safe defensively thanks to two strong pitching performances, the Fighting Owls continued to roll along offensively. Citrus picked up another run in the sixth, and added two more in the seventh.

With the game all ready well out of hand, Vincent left his final mark of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Vincent launched a grand slam over the fence for his fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh RBI’s of the game.

In the win, starter Freedman ran his record to 2-4, while Illhareguy grabs his second save of the season. Citrus’ record improves to 18-22 overall and 9-15 in WSC South play. The Fighting Owls will continue their conference schedule on Thursday when they travel to LA Mission College for a 2:30 PM game.
