Unlucky Number 7

Glendora, CA (Baseball) – The Citrus College baseball team committed seven errors and gave up 17 runs, just six of them earned, in a 17-2 loss to Bakersfield College on Thursday afternoon. The Owls did record eight hits in the loss, but left five runners on base and scored just two runs.

Bakersfield open up the game scoring nine runs in the first three innings. Starter Aaron Chavez got hit earlier and often, as he gave up eight hits and eight runs (four earned), in just 2 1/3 innings of work. Chris Freedman would come in to relieve Chavez, giving the best Citrus pitching performance of the day, pitching 3 2/3 innings and giving up just two hits.

While the Citrus defense was struggling, the offense had problems of its own. The line-up went down in order through the first three innings, and didn’t get past first base until the bottom of the fourth.

In the fourth, freshman outfielder Will Davis led off with a single to right-field.  Julie Reymundo would follow that up with another base knock to right, advancing Davis to third. RBI leader Damien Chavez, then came to the plate and sent a deep sacrifice fly ball to left field that scored Davis for the first of Citrus’ two runs.

The second run would come in the sixth, when Dennis Dunn led off with a double off the wall in left-field, and scored two pitches later after a wild pitch and balk. Dunn would finish the day with his best offensive performance of the season, going 3 for 3 with one run scored.

With the loss Citrus falls one game below .500 as their record moves to 6-7 overall and 0-1 in WSC South play. Citrus will hit the road on Saturday for their second conference game of the season as Bakersfield returns the favor by hosting Citrus. Game time is set for 1:00 PM.
