Baseball Wins Big in Home Opener

Glendora, CA (Baseball) -- The Citrus College baseball team opened up their 2009 home baseball slate with a bang on Friday afternoon, as they absolutely dominated visiting Chaffey College 15-2.

The Fighting Owls wasted little time in jumping all over Chaffey. Citrus put up five runs in the second inning alone, leading off the inning with back to back doubles by freshmen Kyle Nutter and Joseph Garcia.

Two batters later, sophomore Evelio Ahumada would inflict more pain with a two-run shot over the left field fence giving Citrus an early 3-0 lead. Things didn’t get much better from there for Chaffey, when sophomore Julio Raymundo belted a double to center-field that drove in two more runs.

Citrus would continue with their hot hitting in the fourth inning, after another Nutter double drove in Raymundo. Ahumada would drive in another run a few batters later after a single to left-field, while freshman Adrian Cota kept the runs circling the bases after a fielder’s choice RBI with the bases loaded.

Raymundo would come back up to the plate before the inning ended, and roped a two out double to left field driving in two more runs, bringing Citrus’ total to 7 runs scored in the fourth inning.

While the Owls were taking care of business at the plate, starter sophomore Stephen Chakerian was handling his end of the deal on the mound. Chakerian would pitch 5 2/3 sterling innings, striking out three batters and surrendering just two hits along the way, picking up his first win, in his first start of the season.

Citrus would add three more runs in the sixth and seventh innings with freshman Mark Reynoso and Ralph Mendoza picking up RBI’s along the way.

Raymundo would lead the way for Citrus, going 3 for 5 from the dish and driving in a game high 4 RBI’s in the process. Freshman Nutter also had a strong day, going 3 for 4 with 2 RBI’s and 2 run’s scored.

With the win Citrus improves to 2-1 overall, while Chaffey drops to 1-1. The Fighting Owls will be back at home next week as they play host to San Bernardino Valley on Tuesday and Mt. San Jacinto on Saturday. Tuesday’s first pitch is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
