Citrus Snaps Slump With Win Over Pierce

Glendora, CA (Baseball) -- The Citrus College baseball team snapped a two game skid on Saturday afternoon, beating visiting LA Pierce 7-5. Freshman Timothy Pomierski was just one out from his second straight complete game, but instead settled for his sixth victory of the season.

The Brahma’s jumped out on the Owls early in the game, using an RBI single in the first and second innings to take an early 2-0 lead. Citrus finally answered in the third, taking advantage of a few Pierce errors and a wild pitch to score three runs and take a 3-2 advantage.

Pierce clawed themselves back into the game in the top of the fifth inning when Cole McCune launched a Pomierski pitch over the center field wall to give the Brahma’s back a 4-3 lead.

Citrus quickly retaliated though in the bottom of that inning getting back to back RBI singles from Joseph Garcia and Jonathan Parker, as the Fighting Owls wrested back the lead from Pierce taking a 6-4 advantage. The Owls added another insurance run in the sixth when Evelio Ahumada’s sacrifice fly scored Angel Marti.

Finally holding a comfortable lead, Pomierski cruised in the seventh and eighth innings retiring six of the next seven batters he faced. Pomierski did run into some trouble in the ninth giving up a one out run. After that he retired the next batter, then walked another to put runners on first and second.

Needing one more out, Citrus turned to freshman James Janclaes who got the first batter he faced to pop-out to first baseman Scott Vincent giving Citrus their first win in three games.

With the win, Citrus improves to 18-8 overall and 11-6 in WSC South play, while Pierce falls to 12-13 overall and 9-8 in conference games. The Fighting Owls will play their final contest with Pierce on Tuesday when they travel to Woodland Hills to take on the Brahma’s. First pitch is set for 2:30 PM.
