Glendora, CA (Baseball) -- Freshmen Jack Schellin and Bryan Stauffer haven’t been given many opportunities to start this season, but Saturday they were in the starting line-up for Citrus’ Western State Conference match-up with LA Valley College.
The two freshman took the bull by the horns, and made a loud statement that they belonged in that starting line-up as Schellin went 3 for 5 with 2 RBI’s and 2 runs scored, while Stauffer was 4 for 4 with 3 RBI’s and 3 runs scored in Citrus’ 13-2 shellacking of the Monarch’s.
The Fighting Owls didn’t take long to start piling on the runs, using back to back RBI singles by Scott Vincent and Joseph Garcia to jump out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning. That lead got wider in the second when Evelio Ahumada and Schellin opened up the inning with back to back solo home-runs over the left field fence to push the advantage to 4-0.
After adding another run in the fourth, the Fighting Owls blew the game wide open in the fifth when they scored five runs in the fifth, one thanks to an RBI double to center field off the bat of Schellin and two more from a single to center field thanks to Stauffer.
With the offense doing every bit of their part, Citrus freshman Timothy Pomierski went to work on the mound. Pomierski was lights out, surrendering just one hit through the first five innings of the game.
He would run into a bit of trouble in the seventh giving up two, two-out earned runs, but it wouldn’t be enough to taint his strong outing, as he picked up his seventh win of the season, and struck out a season high six batters along the way.
With the win, Citrus improves to 21-8 overall and 14-6 in WSC South Division play, while LA Valley falls to 5-15 overall and 7-23 in conference play. The Fighting Owls will take the next week off from conference play, to participate in the Fullerton Tournament.
