Glendora, CA (Baseball) -- There's no doubt that the Citrus College baseball team is off to one of its best starts in recent memory, but a new trend has emerged over the past four games, that this group of Fighting Owls isn’t quite yet used too. Losing.
Through the first 11 games of the season Citrus was 9-2, including a perfect 6-0 at home. Over the past four games however, Citrus has slipped going 1-3, including suffering their first home loss of the year on Thursday afternoon to Glendale College.
Citrus struggles started early, as the Fighting Owls pitching struggled to throw strikes. Starter James Janclaes got through just one and two-thirds innings throwing 46 pitches and just 24 strikes.
Glendale got things going offensively right away scoring two runs in the top of the first grabbing their first lead of the day. Citrus quickly came back in the bottom of the same inning getting a pair of RBI doubles from Angel Marti and Kyle Nutter to tie the game up at 2-2.
The Vaqueros would continue to keep the runs coming, grabbing two more each in the second and fourth innings taking a commanding 6-2 lead. Citrus would try and mount a comeback getting a run in the fourth and fifth innings thanks to two RBI singles, one off the bat of Julio Raymundo, and the other from Jack Schellin.
That would be all Citrus would be able to muster, as the Fighting Owls stranded 11 batters (their third highest total this season). One of the few bright spots, came from Schellin and Marti who both went 2 for 4.
With the loss, Citrus’ record falls to 10-5 overall and 4-3 in WSC South Division play. The Fighting Owls will try and pick themselves back up on Saturday when they head to Glendale for another conference match-up. First pitch is set for 1:00 PM.
