Glendora, CA (Baseball) -- The Citrus College Baseball team dropped its first home contest of the season on Saturday afternoon in a 3-8 loss to LA Valley. The Fighting Owls used five different pitchers, gave up 12 hits, and left 13 runners on the bases as they suffered their second conference loss of the year.
After Valley opened up the game with a run in the first, Citrus took an early lead in the bottom of the inning with RBI singles from Joseph Garcia and Luis Hernandez that gave them a 2-1 lead. That would be all the offense could muster until the final inning of the game though, as Valley kept on hitting.
The Monarchs would snag an unearned run in the second and three more (two unearned) in the fourth to take a 5-2 lead. Valley would keep it going in the sixth and eighth as they picked up three more insurance runs between the two innings to take a comfortable 8-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth.
Citrus would start out ninth promising enough with a Garcia double and Kyle Nutter single. Hernandez snagged his second RBI of the game as the next batter with a single through the left side, but Nutter was picked off, Charles Ball struck out, and Greg Salcido flied out to right to end the threat and the game.
With the loss, Citrus falls to 11-5 overall and 2-2 in WSC South play. The Fighting Owls will start next week out on the road on Tuesday before hosting two home games on Thursday and Saturday. Tuesday’s game at Glendale is set for a 2:30 PM start.
