    Hitting It Off

    Thursday, February 04, 2010

Glendora, CA (Baseball) -- The Citrus College Baseball team knew that coming into this season that offense probably wasn’t going to be an issue. That assumption was confirmed in their season opener on Thursday afternoon when they recorded 24 hits and scored 14 runs in their 14-4 victory over visiting Chaffey College.

The Fighting Owls wasted little time scoring four runs in the first and another in the second. After almost getting set down in order in the third, Citrus came roaring back with another big inning and a five spot in the fourth inning, three more in the fifth and their final run of the game in the seventh.

Sophomore first baseman Kyle Nutter was 4 for 5 with 3 run’s and 3 RBI’s, while freshman catcher Nicholas Bergara went 3 for 5 with 3 RBI’s and a pair of runs scored.

While Citrus did struggle defensively (four errors), the Fighting Owls did get a solid outing from their pitching staff. After giving up two unearned runs in the opening inning, starter James Janclaes settled down and went five innings strong giving up just four hits, no earned runs and striking out three batters along the way.

With the win, Citrus improves to 1-0 while Chaffey drops to 0-1. Chaffey will get another shot at Citrus on Tuesday when they take their turn and host the Fighting Owls. First pitch is set for 2:00 PM.
