Bakersfield, CA (Cross Country) -- Despite having five of Citrus' seven women runners participating in the 2008 Southern California Championships, run their best times of the year this weekend, the Lady Owls moved on just one runner to the State Meet on November 22nd. Freshman Vanessa Esquivel will be Citrus' lone representative at the State Championships in Fresno.
Esquivel led the pack of Citrus runners at the Kern County Soccer Park. Esquivel ran the 5K event in a time of 20:26.67, her best 5K time of the season. For her efforts, Esquivel finished in 77th place out of the 196 participating runners. Finishing just behind her, and barely missing out on a State Championship berth, was freshman Amber Clark. Clark ran the course in a time of 21:20, finishing in 105th place. Along with Esquivel and Clark, Elizabeth Granados, Rachel Kottkamp, and Sarah Guest all finished with season best times.
For the men, Gilbert Del Muro was the lone Citrus representative in Bakersfield. Del Muro finished the 4-Mile run in a time of 23:35.00, and in 176th place out of the 202 participating runners.
Esquivel will continue onto the 2008 California Community College Cross Country State Championships in two weekends. The event, which takes place at Woodward Park in Fresno, CA, is set to begin at 10:00 AM.
