Glendora, CA (Cross Country) -- After over three decades of coaching, including 21 as the Head Cross Country Coach here at Citrus College, reigning Western State Conference Coach of the Year Maury Greer has decided to call it a career.
“After coaching for such a long time, it feels like the right time to step down,” said Greer. “I’ve enjoyed coaching all of my athletes throughout all the different years. We won our share of championships and had good athletes, but even in our down years, I’ve always felt that I’ve been able to send out a good group of kids.”
“Maury will be sorely missed,” said Citrus College Dean of Physical Education and Athletics Jody Wise. “His 21 years of service to this school have been invaluable, and he will not be easy to replace.”
Under Greer, the Citrus College Cross Country team won five conference championships, and Greer was named the Coach of the Year on five separate occasions, including this past year when his 2009 women’s squad qualified for the State Championships for the first time in 10 seasons.
Along with his time with the cross country team, Greer also spent 15 seasons as the Head Track and Field Coach. The Fighting Owls won nine conference championships, and Greer himself was named Coach of the Year twice while he was at the helm.
A 1972 graduate of San Jose State, where he ran track and was named team captain, Greer kicked off his coaching career at Northview High School where he served as the Head Cross Country and Track and Field Coach for 15 years. Greer will continue to stay on at Citrus College as a member of the physical education department faculty.
