Shaw Named Head Cross Country Coach

    Thursday, January 21, 2010

Glendora, CA (Cross Country) -- Current Citrus College Head Track and Field Coach Nicki Shaw has been tabbed to take over the Citrus College Cross Country program. Shaw, steps in to the role after former head coach Maury Greer retired last week, after 21 years at the helm of the program.

“I am really excited for this opportunity. When it comes to track; distance runners and throwers are the athletes who can experience the most growth over such a short span,” Shaw said. “This opportunity not only allows me to grow as a coach, but it lets me be at the front-end of an experience for athletes whose development is only just beginning with us at Citrus.  Distance runners grow so much over their careers; they really don't hit their stride until their late 20s and 30s. They have an amazing potential; the possibilities for growth are exponential.”

For the past three years, Shaw has served as the Head Track and Field Coach, and a faculty member of the Citrus College Physical Education Department. Shaw came to Citrus after spending two years as the assistant track and field and cross country coach at NCAA Division III Bowdoin College in Maine.

“Over the past three seasons with our track and field program, Nicki has proven herself to be a very capable head coach,” said Dean of Physical Education and Athletics Jody Wise. “I have no doubt that she will continue to do the same with the cross country program, and begin to fill the large shoes that Coach Greer leaves behind.”

Shaw is a 1996 graduate of Mount Holyoke College, where she holds the school record for the hammer/weight throw. While competing for the Lyons, Shaw earned All-American honors and was named the MVP of the indoor season. After graduating from Mount Holyoke, Shaw coached at her alma mater for one season before moving on to Smith College where she served as the Assistant Women’s Track and Field Coach for two seasons while working on her Masters.
