Valley Glen, CA (Cross Country) -- The Citrus College Women’s Cross Country team continued to dominate like few Citrus squads have done before this past weekend, as they placed 5th at the WSC Preview hosted by LA Valley College. The 5th place finish was the best finish by a Citrus team in recent memory.
Racing in what is arguably the toughest cross country conference (six teams from the WSC are ranked in the South Top 14 the most of any conference); the Lady Owls were led by the usual suspects.
After finishing in 17th place last year, Sophomore Vanessa Esquivel had one of her best races of the year crossing the finish line of the 5K course with a time of 20:11.80 and in 8th place overall. Esquivel’s performance was over a minute faster than last year’s time as she averaged a 6:29 mile.
Freshman Melissa Granados also continued to shine, grabbing a 12th place overall finish with a time of 20:30.89, and was followed by Sophomore Cynthia Acedo who finished 25th with a time of 21:40.59. Thanks to their performance, the women returned to the Southern California Poll this week at #14, after dropping out of the rankings last week.
While the women impressed the men continued to struggle. The men finished 12th out of the 12 teams participating with Sophomore Max Urieta coming in as Citrus’ top finisher in 72nd place (25:13.91).
The Fighting Owls will get back out on the course this Friday as they participate in the Southern California Preview hosted by Mt. San Antonio College. The first race is set for 10:00 AM.
