Owls Drop First Game

Torrance, CA -- Coming off three straight Western States Conference Championships, the 2006 Citrus College Owls we’re hoping to get off to a strong start against a tough #4 ranked El Camino College.

The Owls came out firing attempting and completing an onside kick when they recovered the ball on their own 48. From there Owl quarterback Bryan Waggener came out hot, completing his first pass to Charles Lewis for 13 yards to the El Camino 39, and two plays later completing another pass for a first down, this time to Artha Combest who picked up 10 yards.

After that the El Camino defense dug in their heels, as the next two passes from Waggener were completed for a total loss of 10 yards. After his last pass fell incomplete, Kirk Cabana came in and missed a 48 yard field goal attempt giving El Camino the ball for the first time in the game.

Once they got the ball they never looked back driving 68 yards on 10 plays, finishing off the drive with an 8 yard touchdown pass from Tavares Kendrick to Kayne Farquharson.

After an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on El Camino and a great return by Artha Combest the Owls once again found themselves with great field position on the El Camino 38. It only took two minutes and fifty seconds for the Owls to put the ball in the end zone, when Demarcus Flanagan scored with the ball on the 1 yard line, for what would be the Owls only score on the night.

From there it was all Warriors, as they never allowed the Owls to get into a rhythm. The Warriors racked up 244 yards rushing while holding the Owls to -22 yards rushing. Waggener, who has signed a letter of intent to play for the University of Florida next year, went 14-30 with 2 interceptions and 103 yards, while on the other side Kendrick Tavares went 13-18 with 1 interception, 2 touchdowns, and 155 yards.

The real story of the night for the Owls was their inability to stop the run as Warrior running back Jamicah Bass carried the ball 15 times amassing 133 yards and 2 touchdowns while averaging 8.9 yards per carry, including a long of 26 yards.

With the loss the Owls will fall to 0-1 on the season, with rival Mt. San Antonio College on the horizon. The Mounties come calling on September 9th @ 7:00 pm at Citrus Stadium in Glendora, CA.
