Football -- After two straight losses to begin the season (#1 El Camino and #3Mt. SAC) the Citrus College Owls football team has rattled off two straight wins to start their WSC schedule 2-0. Just like last week against Santa Monica, this contest was all Owls.
They came out firing right out of the gate, after receiving the ball on the kick-off the Owls took 3 plays and 1 minute and 22 seconds to go 60 yards and get the first score of the game as Sophomore Quarterback Bryan Waggener connected with Phillip Kerber for an 8 yard touchdown. Owl kicker Kirk Cabana wasn’t able to convert on the extra point putting the Owls up 6-0. The Owls would score again in that 1st quarter this time taking over 3 minutes to score capped off by a 13 yard pass completion from Bryan Waggener to Chris Marshall for the score. The Owls couldn’t convert on the extra point attempt and found themselves up 13-0.
On the ensuing kickoff the Owls tried and on-side kick and were successful when kicker Kirk Cabana recovered the ball for the Owls on the Owls 46 yard line. The offense marched down the field and would score on a 1 yard TD run from Brandon Sellers to begin the 2nd quarter.
The Owls defense picked up right where the left off, dominating the 1st half holding the Huskies offense to 136 yards and -9 rushing yards in the first two quarters. East Los Angeles wasn’t able to get on to the board until with 50 seconds left in the half QB Aaron Garcia completed a 25 yard pass to Steve Hernandez for the Huskies first score of the night. They too had extra point problems not converting on the ensuing try, causing them to trail 19-6.
In the second half the Owls special teams picked up their play. After the defense got the Owls to go four and out Xavier Tucker blocked the Huskies punt giving the Owls the ball on the East LA 8 yard line. It would take the 4 plays but on 4th and goal Brandon Sellers punched in another 1 yard touchdown to put the Owls up 26-6. The Owls would score four more times in the game with Leonard Mason scoring on a 60 yard TD run, Kirk Cabana connecting on a 28 yard field goal attempt, Leonard Mason scoring again this time on a 8 yard TD run, and Gerame Vaden putting the nail in the coffin on a 42 yard touchdown run with 3 minutes left in the game putting the Owls up 50-12.
The Owls defense was stout most of the night, but gave up two more scores in the second half the first when Aaron Garcia connected with Steve Hernandez for a 32 yard strike, and the last coming with 35 seconds left in the game when Aaron Garcia got his third TD pass of the game when he found Geoffrey Leslie in the end zone from 6 yards out.
In the 50-18 win the Owls were led by Leonard Mason who ran for 134 yards, averaged 8.9 yards a rush, and 2 scores. Sophomore QB Bryan Waggener was stellar completing 12 of 20 passes for 177 yards and 2 touchdowns. Wide Receiver Charles Lewis also had an awesome game pulling in 7 catches for 110 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball Jason Assauna led the attack with 6.5 tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss, and ½ a sack. George Lewis was strong for the Owls secondary as he recorded 3.5 tackles and 2 pass break-ups.
With the win the Owls move to 2-2 on the season and 2-0 in WSC play. Up next for the Owls is Compton College who visits Citrus Stadium for a 1:00 pm match-up.
