Glendora, CA -- The 2006 Citrus Football team got their first win of the season as they beat Santa Monica College 41-3. It was the best performance of the year by the Owls as they dominated on the field and on the scoreboard.
It didn’t take long for the Owls to get on the scoreboard when 2 minutes into the game Bryan Waggener found wide receiver Charles Lewis for a 16 yard strike to put the Owls up 7-0. The Owls defense held strong getting the Corsairs to go four and out, but on the ensuing Owl drive Santa Monica’s D’Andre Thomas forced a Leonard Mason fumble while Corsair Jamal Bernard jumped on it giving Santa Monica the ball on the Citrus 34. The Owls defense held strong again only giving up 5 yards on 3 plays forcing a field goal attempt by the Corsairs. Sean Whyte came in and drilled a 46 yard field goal to give Santa Monica their only score of the night with 7:26 left on the clock in the 1st quarter and the score at 7-3.
From there it was all Owls all night. The Owls marched right back down the field on a 8 play 75 yard drive, finished off when Alex Gaines punched the ball in from the 1 yard line putting the score at 14-3. When the Owls defense gave the offense the ball back, the Owls once again had no problems getting down the field as Leonard Mason broke off a 23 yard touchdown run pushing the Owls further ahead 21-3.
The Owls would go on to score one more time in the 1st half when quarterback Brian Waggener led a 3 minute 28 second, 7 play, 42 yard drive ending in a Waggener 6 yard pass to Charles Lewis for the 28-3 lead.
Despite the explosiveness of the Owls offense, the Owls defense was just as spectacular only allowing 45 yards in the 1st half including slowing down Santa Monica quarterback Colin Clancy who completed only 2 of 7 passes for 5 yards. They also didn’t allow Santa Monica to complete a 3rd down conversion causing them to go 0-7.
In the second half it was much of the same story for the Owls. The Owls first drive started with a 40 yard completed pass from Weggener to running back Leonard Mason. The Owls offense stalled on the Santa Monica 21 yard line, but kicker Kirk Cabana came in and nailed 37 yard field goal to put the Owls up 31-3. Cabana struck again this time from 30 yards out with 3:46 left to go in the 3rd quarter putting the Owls up 34-3. In the 4th quarter the Owls scored for their last time when Gerame Vaden scored on an 11 yard touchdown run making the score 41-3.
In the win the defense was superb holding Santa Monica to 124 total yards (67 rushing, 57 passing). They held the Corsairs to a paltry 2.3 yards per rush attempt. Paul Clark led all Owls with 4.5 tackles. As good as the defense was the offense was equally as strong amassing 420 yards, 187 in the air and 233 on the ground. Leonard Mason led the Owls with 124 yards on 10 rushes for a 12 yards per rush average and 1 touchdown. Waggener was outstanding in the win going 13 for 20 with 183 yards and 1 touchdown.
With the win the Owls move to 1-2 on the season (1-0 in WSC play). Next up for the Owls is a road trip to Monterrey Park to visit East Los Angeles College a fellow WSC member. Kickoff is at 7:00 pm.
