Citrus Can’t Get Out of the Harbor

Glendora, CA (Football) -- After starting off the season with a disappointing 20-28 road loss to Santa Ana College last week, the Citrus College Fighting Owl football team was looking forward to setting sail against LA Harbor College on Saturday.

What they got instead was another loss, as two Citrus quarterbacks combined to throw 4 interceptions and the defense gave up over 500 yards of total offense in a 20-30 let down against the Seahawks.

Harbor didn’t waste anytime getting their offense rolling as they were the first team to get on board, when Seahawk’s quarterback Andrew Trudnowski (25-44, 353 yards, 2 TD’s) connected with Earl Ford for a 19 yard score with 9:35 to play in the first quarter.

Citrus quickly responded with a touchdown of their own, thanks to quarterback David Potts hooking up with wide-receiver Adolph Overstreet for a 7 yard score that tied the game up at 6-6, after both teams failed their extra-point attempts.

From their Harbor went on to score 14 unanswered points, as the Seahawks got a 10 yard touchdown run from Ford, and another touchdown pass from Trudnowski who threw a 25 yard strike to Adam Aranda to put Harbor up 20-6 early in the second quarter.

The Fighting Owls would get another score before the half ended, when Potts hit Rashon Morris who took the ball 86 yards up the field for the longest touchdown of the day. Despite the big gain, the Owls would still trail 20-13 at the half. In the first half alone, the Seahawks racked up 325 yards of total offense, 218 through the air and 107 on the ground.

After the offensive outpouring in the first half, both defenses buckled down in the second with the lone score in the third quarter, coming off the foot of the Seahawk’s Gerardo Mejia, who nailed a 28 yard field goal pushing their lead to 10 points.

From there both teams would trade drives, before Harbor finally put the game away for good with a Zach Zolin five yard touchdown scamper with just over two minutes to play.

Leading the way for the Fighting Owls offensively was running back Artha Combest (13 carries, 93 yards) and quarterback David Potts (10 of 13, 150 yards, 1 TD) who was relieved by Johnathan Price early in the second quarter after getting injured on his 86 yard touchdown pass.

The Seahawks were bolstered, not only by the play of Trudnowski, but by wide receiver Chris Matthews (11 catches, 159 yards) and running back Earl Ford (21 rushes, 176 yards, 2 TD’s).

The lone bright spot defensively for Owls came thanks to freshman linebacker Bronze Withem who had a team season high 15 tackles, including two tackles for a loss and one quarterback hurry.

With the loss Citrus’ record will fall to 0-2, while Harbor improves to 1-1. The Fighting Owls will hit the road once again next week as it travels to West Los Angeles College to take on LA Southwest College. Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM.
