Harbored

Wilmington, CA (Football) -- After a disappointing season opener in which the Citrus College football team gained 130 yards of offense and gave up over 400 yards of it, the Fighting Owls turned their attention to Saturday night’s game in which they hoped to set sail at LA Harbor College. Unfortunately for Citrus, the Fighting Owls were harbored by the Seahawk offense (the State’s top-ranked attack) which racked up 560 yards of total offense in a 14-47 loss for Citrus.

Things started out promising enough for the Fighting Owls as quarterback Byron Ingram led Citrus on a five play 55 yard opening drive that ended with a one yard touchdown run for freshman Nicholas Barbone and gave Citrus a 7-0 lead.

Harbor quickly answered with a pair of touchdown drives of their own, but a 72-yard punt return for a touchdown by Citrus’ Brandon Stansell would even up the score at 14-14 going into the second quarter.

Unfortunately for Citrus, that’s when Harbor’s offense kicked it into high gear. Quarterback Dominique Blackman led the Seahawks on consecutive back-breaking drives late in the second quarter. The first drive ended with a 19 yard touchdown pass to Jon White, while the second was a 97-yard drive that took just four plays and gave them a considerable 27-14 half-time lead.

In the second half Harbor continued their dominance scoring three more times in the third quarter and putting Citrus away for good. Blackman would finish the game 29 of 44 for 441 yards and six touchdowns.

For Citrus, freshman running back Brandon Stansell would be the offensive bright spot, as he recorded 210 all-purpose yards. Defensively, Citrus was led by Vincent Aguilar who recorded seven tackles, one and half tackles for a loss, and one sack.

Citrus will return home next weekend still in search of its first victory of the season. The Fighting Owls will play host to Los Angeles Southwest College who is also winless thus far during the 2009 campaign. Kick-off is set for 1:00 PM.
