Santa Maria, CA (Football) -- The Citrus College football team went into Saturday’s contest with the 9th ranked Allan Hancock Bulldogs expecting a vicious ground attack from the South’s #3 ranked rushing attack. Instead, the Fighting Owls were blitzed by the Bulldogs passing attack which racked up 354 yards in the air in a 23-48 loss for Citrus.
In a role reversal, it was Citrus who had a decent game on the ground, racking up 196 yards rushing, including 117 from sophomore Isaac Tucker. Alas, it wasn’t enough as the Bulldogs scored five times in the first half compared to Citrus’ two.
Citrus’ pair of touchdowns in the first half came thanks to freshman Brandon Stansell who had a 15 yard TD run in the first quarter, and an 80 yard kick-off returned for a touchdown in the second quarter. Defensively, Citrus was led by sophomore Christyn Lewis who had a game high 12 tackles, one pass break-up, and a blocked kick.
With the loss, Citrus falls to 1-3 on the season, while Hancock improves to 4-0. The Fighting Owls will try and bounce back next weekend when it opens up Central Conference play at home against College of the Desert. Kick-off is set for 1:00 PM.
