Rancho Cucamonga, CA (Football) -- Quarterback Byron Ingram connected with Tyra Waits on a 41 yard strike with 3:52 left in the game to put Citrus up by three points, and that’s all the Fighting Owls would need as they stunned host Chaffey 20-17 on Saturday evening.
The Fighting Owls would score twice in the first half to take a 14-3 lead after Ingram connected with Andrew Romero on a 20 yard TD and Damon Baca on a five yard score. In the second half though it would be all Chaffey as one yard TD run by Jahmal Rover and 12 yard TD catch by Ricky Howard gave the Panthers the lead with 12:28 left in the 4th quarter.
After the Citrus offense turned the ball over on fourth down on the Chaffey 35 yard line and 10:39 left to play, the Citrus defense stepped up and got a stop, giving the offense back the ball with 7:23 left on the clock.
With plenty of time left on the clock, the Fighting Owls fed their running backs as Maurice Williams and Brandon Stansell took Citrus from their own 16 yard line down to the Chaffey 41.That’s when Ingram stepped up and found Waits who gave Citrus the lead for good.
Ingram would finish the day 22 of 40 for 246 yards and 3 touchdowns. Sophomore Damon Baca would prove to be his favorite target, hauling in a game high six passes for 63 yards and a score. Defensively, Citrus would be led by Robert Horn who recorded a game high seven tackles, including one for a loss.
With the win, Citrus improves to 2-6 overall and 1-3 in Central Conference games, while Chaffey falls to 2-5 and 0-3 in conference games. The Fighting Owls will try and keep this momentum going through next weeks bye and into their game with the #1 team in the South and #4 ranked team in the Nation, El Camino College two weeks from today. Kick-off is set for 6:00 PM at Murdock Stadium.
