Glendora, CA (Men’s Basketball) – The Fighting Owls Men’s Basketball team has advanced to their fifth straight tournament championship game dating back to last season. Citrus shot 45.7% from the floor as they trounced East LA College 98-62 in the second round of the 2007 Neil Edwards Classic.
The game was close for the first seven minutes, but the Fighting Owls would blow a 10-10 tie wide open with a 28-5 run. Eight of those points would come off of fast-break opportunities, which included some electrifying plays from Citrus as sophomores Darren Moore and Jeremy Smith brought down the house with dunks that came within two minutes of each other.
Citrus would utilize its depth to control the game throughout, as their lead never fell below 20-points after the first half. Citrus’ bench outscored the Huskies 61-37 as they cruised to a 36-point victory. Through their first seven games, the Owls have out-scored their opponents by an average of 44 points.
In the win, the Owls were lead by AJ Gasporra who was 5 of 7 from the 3-point line and scored a game high 17 points. Freshman forward Troy Payne grabbed a game high nine boards, while point-guard Kelly Johnson dished out a game high five assists.
With the win, Citrus improves to 7-0 on the season, and advances to the championship game of the Neil Edwards Classic where they will square off with Orange Coast College. The Pirates arrive in the championship game with an 82-77 win over Cuyumaca on Friday and an impressive 98-77 victory over Chaffey College. Tip-off is set for 6:00 PM.
