Shock and Awe

Glendora, CA (Men’s Basketball) – The Citrus College men’s basketball team, ranked #1 in Southern California by jchoops.com, continued to impress as they used a plethora of dunks, pressure defense, and fast break fireworks to shock and awe Cypress College with a 93-70 win on Friday night. In their last pre-conference test of the year, the Fighting Owls looked every bit of their #1 ranking as they shot 58.1% from the floor and forced the Chargers into 26 turnovers in their 23-point victory.

Cypress, who had won six of its previous seven games coming into Friday’s contest, looked ready to challenge the Fighting Owls as they answered just about every Citrus bucket over the first ten minutes of the game.

With Citrus leading by four points 25-21, the Fighting Owls made their move. Ralph Monday would kick start a 20-3 run as he finished a 3-point play after making a lay-up and the ensuing free-throw. Six minutes, three fast-break dunks, and 20 points later, Citrus had a commanding 21-point 45-24 lead that would prove too much for the Chargers to overcome.

Sophomore guard Darren Moore turned in one of his best performances of the season as he scored a team high 17 points on 7 of 10 shooting from the floor. Not only was Moore practically unstoppable on the offensive end, but he put together an impressive show on the defensive end recording a team high four steals and one block.

With their pre-conference schedule behind them, the Fighting Owls turn their heads to Western State Conference South play. Citrus’ conference slate starts Wednesday with a home tilt against Canyons College. The women’s game is set for 5:30 PM, while the men’s game will follow at 7:30 PM.
