The Basketball Blog: Focus on Cuesta and Saturday’s Task

    Thursday, March 04, 2010

Throughout the Citrus College Men’s Basketball team’s journey in the 2010 CCCAA State Playoffs, Citrus College Sophomore De’Andre Haskins will give the Fighting Owl faithful periodic insight into what is going on with him and the team. Today’s blog is the third installment of The Basketball Blog.

This week in practice the coaches have established a new way in going about making us better as a team. They have been putting us in a situation in which we have to play hard, smart and together for two 20 minutes halves. The coaches are doing this so that we will get the experience of trying to play a perfect game, by making us compete for 40 minutes. The coaches have done a great job of showing us our opponent’s tendencies every day, so that we will be able to master their habits and try to dominate them once game time comes.

Learning about Cuesta has been a great experience for me. We have been watching film on each specific position a lot more. We know that most of Cuesta’s players aren’t from the USA. Because of that, they have a different style of play individually, but when watching the film we’ve seen that they play very well as a team. In the film sessions we pointed out that their top player [Roger] Guardia and Cuesta communicate well on the floor. They also have a very good point guard that can pass and can make plays from anywhere [Christian Koutras].

Throughout practice this week I feel like each and every one of our players, from our starters to our redshirts, have really been concentrating and are “locked in” (as we say like to say) on our defensive tasks. Practices have been great because we can feel everyone is focused and engaged, which makes practice so much more fun and productive, not least of which because we love to compete.

I am most looking forward to our family competing together on Saturday, and the next “THRILL” of our family. I can’t wait for us to get the chance to play together and have all of us on the same page
