La Quinta & Bakersfield, CA (Men's Golf) -- The 2007 Citrus College men's golf team had a long weekend of golf filled with highs and lows. The highest point came on their first day of action on Thursday April 12, while playing in the College of the Desert Tournament at the PGA West - Greg Norman Course.
Freshman Matt Peich walked up to the 4th hole and proceeded to ace it, grabbing the first hole-in-one of the season during competition. Though research is limited, it is believed that this is the first hole-in-one of the year in the state of California junior college sanctioned play. It has also been 13 years since a Citrus golfer has aced a hole. Kevin Dowdle pulled of the feat in 1994 while playing at the Moreno Valley Country Club.
While Peich's hole-in-one was certainly the highlight of the weekend, the Fighting Owls still had some golf to play on the course. Kyle Mendoza had the high score of the weekend shooting a 77 on the Greg Norman Course and the 75 on the Desert Island Course.
Peich's hole-in-one helped him to a 81 on the Greg Norman Course, and Kevin Callahan's chip-in at the Desert Island course helped him to a 75. When all was said and done Citrus finished 4th in the 4 team tournament with a 419 on Thursday and 411 on Friday.
After the weekend tournament with College of the Desert, the Fighting Owls hit the road once again for a Western States Conference Match in Bakersfield, CA at Rio Bravo Country Club. The Fighting Owls struggled at the course finishing in 7th place for the first time this year. Kevin Callahan was the top Citrus golfer with a 74, and the team as a whole finished with a score of 409.
With the regular season behind them, the Fighting Owls will turn their focus to the WSC Championships hosted by Ventura College on Monday April 30th.
