    Whoolery Mammoth

Santa Clarita, CA (Men’s Golf) -- Ever since firing a disappointing 81 back on March 31st at the WSC Event hosted by Glendale College, sophomore Steve Whoolery has been one of the hottest golfers in the State. Whoolery has positioned himself into the top five individual spots in the WSC, and solidified that further on Wednesday afternoon when he shot a four under par 67 at the WSC Event hosted by Canyons College.

Whoolery’s 67 was the best round of the day, and tied him for the lowest round of any WSC golfer this year at any conference event. Only Santa Barbara’s Andrew Perez and Ventura’s Russell Boring have shot 67 this year, both coming earlier in the season. Furthermore Whoolery’s Wednesday round is the best round of any Citrus golfer since they joined the Western State Conference back in 2000.

Citrus would ride Whoolery’s coat tails on Wednesday afternoon, as the rest of the team struggled a little bit. Sophomore Sanshiro Kato shot a six over 77, with fellow sophomores Matt Peich and Brett McCollum finishing two strokes back of him with a pair of 81’s. The team shot a combined 388 and finished in fourth place, four shots out of second place.

The 2009 regular season came to a close with the end of Wednesday’s match. The Fighting Owls will be looking for a shot at the post season come next Monday when they participate in the WSC Championships at Cypress Ridge Golf Course in San Luis Obispo, CA.
