The Citrus College Men’s Soccer Team had its worst outing of the year when they played host to Southwestern College out of San Diego, CA on Friday September 15, 2006.
In the beginning of the first half Southwestern starter Gabriel Amaya went down with a broken leg. After a nearly 20 minute layoff the game resumed, and the Owls came out flat while Southwestern flourished. The Owls were dominated only getting 2 shots off in the 1st half including 1 shot on goal.
On the other side of the fence was Southwestern who dominated on the pitch with 10 shots including 5 on goal. Southwestern scored three goals in that first half. The first goal came from Eric Monterrubio who was on the receiving end of a Southwestern corner kick. The ball ended up on his foot and he made the Owls pay. 5 minutes later another strike came again this time from Edgar Maldonado of a Marcos Leon assist. Less than a minute after that, they struck one more time with Xavier Moreno finding the back of the net off an Edgar Gil pass. Southwestern accumulated 6 corner kicks in that first half.
The second half proved to be much of the same with Southwestern controlling the tempo on the pitch leading Citrus in most categories. Southwestern picked up their 4th goal on the day when Eric Monterrubio drew a foul in the penalty box, bringing in Xavier Moreno to take the penalty shot. Moreno scored giving Southwestern a 4-0 lead. A few minutes later they struck yet again when Eric Monterrubio found the back of the net to put Southwestern up 5-0. The lone goal for the Owls came in the 89th minute when Renee Castro scored off a Reese Keegans assist to make the final score 5-1.
In the loss Citrus was out-shot 23-7 with the shots on goal margin being 12-5. Southwestern especially dominated the corner kicks with 11 corners for Southwestern and only 2 for the Owls.
With the loss the Owls fall to 1-3-1 on the season. The Owls will travel on Tuesday to San Bernardino Valley for a 4:00 pm match-up.
