A New Dawn

Glendora, CA (Men’s Soccer) – After a rough 2006 season, in which the Fighting Owls only won two games, the Citrus College Men’s Soccer coaching staff hit the recruiting trail with a renewed fervor. What they came back with was a host of talent that the Fighting Owls haven’t seen in many years. Only four games into the new season, that talent has begun to shine through as Citrus College has all ready matched its 2006 win total with a 4-0 win over San Bernardino Valley College Tuesday afternoon.

Freshman Yves Tanonko celebrates his goal in Tuesday's 4-0 win over San Bernardino Valley CollegeCitrus College got things rolling in the twentieth minute, when it earned its first strike. After Juan Salas got the ball at about midfield he quickly kicked it ahead of all the Wolverine defenders to a wide open Yves Tanonko. Tanonko, on the right side of the field and only the goalie to beat, quickly flicked the ball to the upper left hand corner of the net to give the Fighting Owls a 1-0 lead.

Less than ten minutes later the Owls would strike again, but in a more unlikely manner than before. With the Citrus offense pressuring the San Bernardino defense deep into their own territory, Jerry Flores ricocheted a pass of the foot of a Wolverine defender and into the SBV goal giving Citrus a 2-0 lead.

The third and fourth scores for Citrus came well into the second half. Michael Sanchez got the first score, when in the 67th minute he hit pay dirt. Just ten minutes later, the Owls recorded their final goal of the afternoon as Robert Fuentes put a penalty kick past the Wolverines goalie to make the final score 4-0.

The Fighting Owls controlled the pace for most of the game out-shooting San Bernardino 20-10. Within that Citrus also had eight shots on goal compared to the Wolverines three.

With the win Citrus moves to 2-2 on the season, matching its 2006 win total. The Fighting Owls hit the road for the next two weeks starting off with a trip to Riverside on Friday September 7, 2007. Game time is set for 4:00 PM.
