The Beautiful Game

Glendora, CA(Men’s Soccer) – Around the world, the game of soccer is known as “the beautiful game.” For the past few seasons, the game being played on the pitch in Citrus stadium has been far from that, but this season has been different. With a renewed focus, the Citrus coaching staff has worked hard to bring a quality brand of soccer to Citrus stadium, and their hard work has begun to pay off. With the conferences 1st place team coming into town this afternoon, the Fighting Owls brought their “A” game, and played their best game of the year as they knocked off Oxnard 2-1.

Freshman Juan Salas helped anchor a defens that held Oxnard to just 9 total shotsIn the first half the Owls hung tough with Oxnard, out-shooting them and seemingly gaining all of the momentum. Citrus got on the board first in the 30th minute when Yves Tanonko connected to give the Owls a 1-0 lead. Oxnard would come roaring back ten minutes later, when they parlayed a defensive error by the Owls into a goal by Sergio Garcia to tie the game up all at one a piece.

In the second half the Owls would build upon the momentum that they gained in the first half, by dominating the play on the pitch for the final 45 minutes of the game. Citrus didn’t waste anytime of getting back their lead as Greg Garcia’s laser from 25 yards out struck gold in the 46th minute to give the Owls a 2-1 lead. Over the rest of the second half the Owls would take over the match, missing on just a few close calls, and only allowing the Oxnard offense to get three shots off in the second half.

For the game, the Owls put a stranglehold on the stat sheet out-shooting the Condors 17-9 including a 10-3 margin in the second half alone. The Owls also had five corner kicks compared to none for Oxnard.

With the win, the Fighting Owls improve to 7-4-5 overall and 3-2-2 in WSC play. Citrus will be back at home for their next two contests, starting with a match-up with LA Mission this Friday October 15th. The Owls and Eagles have squared off once all ready this season, with the Owls coming home with a 1-5 loss. Game-time is set for 1:00 PM.
