Fighting Owls Keep Playoff Hopes Alive With Two Second Half Goals

Glendora, CA (Men’s Soccer) -- With their 2008 season teetering on the brink, the Citrus College men’s soccer team scored two second half goals, to overcome a 1-0 deficit at half-time and keep their 2008 playoff hopes alive on Tuesday afternoon. The Fighting Owls 2-1 win over Glendale was their ninth victory of the season, and possibly the most important yet.

Ryan Barksdale scored the game tying goal in Citrus' 2-1 Things seemed pretty dim early on in the game, when Glendale’s Nelson Bustillos scored an unassisted goal in the 28th minute, giving the Vaqueros an early 1-0 lead. With the Fighting Owls in an early hole, Citrus made the best of their opportunities in the second half despite being out-shot 18-9 over 90 minutes of play.

Citrus’ first strike came in the 54th minute when Ryans Barksdale connected on an unassisted goal that tied the game up at 1-1. Minutes later, Citrus worked to keep the ball deep in Glendale territory, and drew a penalty kick in the 63rd minute. With the season relying on the kick, freshman Carlos Nunez calmly stepped up and buried it, giving Citrus it’s much needed 2-1 victory.

With the win, Citrus improves to 9-7-4 overall and 6-4-3 in Western State Conference play, while Glendale falls to 9-10-3 overall and 6-6-1 in conference play. The Fighting Owls will close out their regular season this Friday at Moorpark College. Game time is set for 3:00 PM.
