Glendora, CA (Men's Soccer) -- The Citrus College Men's Soccer team needed a goal in 88th minute to avoid an upset bid by visiting Canyon's College on Tuesday afternoon. Instead of getting upset, Citrus settled for a 2-2 tie, their third of the season.
The game would be close from the very beginning with both teams getting off eight shots a piece in the first half. Though both teams recorded the same number of shots, Citrus was the lone team to get on the board in the first frame, as Eddie Gutierrez gave the Fighting Owls a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute.
Trailing 1-0 after the first half, Canyons came out firing in the second scoring two goals in the first 25 minutes of the second period. The first goal came thanks to a header by Pablo Gaitan off a Christian Domingo corner kick in the 57th minute, and the second again by Gaitan in the 67th minute this time on a penalty kick.
With their backs against the wall, Citrus went on the offensive attack. The Fighting Owls out-shot Canyons 13-6 in the second half, but most of those shots came up short, until 88:40 was showing on the clock. With time winding down, Yves Tanonko took a Carlos Nunez assist to tie the game up at 2-2.
With the tie Citrus' record moves to 5-4-2 overall and 2-1-2 in WSC play, while Canyons goes to 3-9-2 overall and 0-3-2 in WSC play. After a three game home-stand in which the Fighting Owls went 2-0-1, Citrus will hit the road this Friday for a road game with Glendale College. Game time is set for 7:00 PM.
