Glendora, CA (Men’s Soccer) -- The Citrus College men’s soccer team avenged a 1-3 loss earlier in the season to LA Mission College on Tuesday afternoon, when the Fighting Owls knocked off the Eagles 3-0. Citrus out-shot Mission 17-13 as they picked up their seventh victory of the season.
The Owls got things rolling deep into the first half, when defender Jonathan Longo sent a pass from behind the 50 yard line to the feet of Jason Fontenette. With only the goalie to beat, Fontenette recorded his first goal of the season and gave Citrus a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute.
After grabbing the lead in the first half, Citrus struggled to put the game out of reach early in the second half. The Fighting Owls finally came through when they drew a penalty kick in 70th minute. Leading scorer Eddie Gutierrez stepped up and drilled the ball into the back of the net, giving Citrus a 2-0 cushion. Citrus would add even more to that when Ryan Barksdale grabbed his second goal of the season in the 81st minute.
With the win Citrus improves to 7-5-2 overall and 4-3-2 in Western State Conference play, while LA Mission falls to 3-7-6 overall and 2-3-4 in conference play. Citrus will continue their conference schedule, when they travel to Santa Barbara City College on Friday evening for a 7:00 PM match-up with the first place team in the Western State Conference. Santa Barbara’s only conference loss this season came at the hands of the Fighting Owls, when they knocked off the Vaqueros 3-2 at Citrus stadium.
