Glendora, CA (Men’s Soccer) -- For nearly 89 minutes the Citrus College Men’s Soccer team had outplayed visiting Imperial Valley College in their home opener on Friday afternoon. Despite dominating the Arabs in nearly every aspect of the game all it took was a little flick of the foot in the 89th minute for both teams having to settle for being equals.
From the opening kick, Citrus grabbed control of the pitch taking 10 shots to Imperial Valley’s two in the opening half. Despite have five times as many opportunities in the first half, Citrus was never able to make good on any attempt as they went into the half tied 0-0.
When one team thoroughly dominates another in soccer, but fails to score, it’s only a matter of time before the dominate team breaks through. That was true with Citrus as Emmanuel Felix drilled home a goal late in the first half, giving the Fighting Owls a 1-0 advantage.
With Citrus controlling the pace of the game it seemed as if they were on there way to picking up their second victory of the season until the Arabs got the ball deep in Citrus territory with seconds remaining on the clock.
As the clock threatened to expire, Imperial Valley’s Christopher Campas lobbed in a pass from the sideline to the box, and found Jonathan Lomeli who had squeaked by the last line of Citrus defense and put the ball in the back of the net, equalizing the score at one goal a piece.
With the tie, Citrus’ record moves to 1-2-1. The Fighting Owls will have to wait another week before seeing their next competition, as Citrus will travel to Riverside to take on the Tigers next Friday. The September 18th match-up is set for a 3:00 PM start.
