Glendora, CA (Men’s Water Polo) -- There may be no greater axiom in the sports world than, “there’s no I in team.” The Citrus College Men’s Water Polo team was the perfect example of this saying on Wednesday night as they beat visiting Chaffey College 17-10. The Fighting Owls had seven different players record at least two goals, and 15 of their 17 scores came along with an assist.
Despite finishing with a convincing victory, it would be the Panthers who jumped out of the gate scoring two of the first three goals to take an early 2-1 lead. The Fighting Owls finally righted the ship scoring four straight goals to close out the first quarter, including a Jesse Johnston score with 9 seconds left, to take a 5-2 to lead after one.
In the second quarter, both squads traded goals with Citrus’ Ahmed Elsherif scoring the final goal of the half to give the Fighting Owls an 8-5 advantage at the break.
After the half, Citrus came charging out scoring six goals to Chaffey’s one in the third period. Sophomore Joshua Rodriguez would score two of his team high three goals in the third, one at the 3:56 mark and the other with just 40 seconds left to play in the quarter.
With the game well in hand, Citrus scored three more times in the final frame to take away their seven point victory. In the win, Rodriguez added two assists to his three goals, while sophomore Jordan Rivas and goalie Stephen Dohner each chipped in with a team high three assists.
With the win, Citrus improves to 1-0 overall while Chaffey drops to 0-1. The Fighting Owls will try and keep things going this weekend as they travel to Huntington Beach to participate in the Golden West College Tournament Friday and Saturday.
