Glendora, CA (Softball) -- After taking game one from Golden West on Saturday, the Citrus College softball team were felled by untimely errors in their double-header Sunday afternoon. The 1-0 and 7-3 loss brings an early end to the Lady Owls season as Golden West advances in the SoCal Playoffs to take on Mt. SAC.
Game one Sunday was a pitcher's dual with the lone run, coming in the top of the first inning. With Corinne Milligan, in the circle, the Lady Owls got the first Rustler batter to pop out. After Cynthia Bailey's single to right-field, Milligan got Chelsea Butler to ground out, bringing up Ivy Sessions with two outs and a runner on second base. Sessions hit the ball to center-fielder Caitlin Tolan, who was charged with an error after over-throwing the third baseman and allowing Bailey to score the only run of the game.
Milligan and Butler would battle back in forth in the circle, as both pitchers only allowed three hits and both struck out two batters for the first game of the day. The Lady Owls were never able to generate a run however and fell 1-0 in game one.
In the second game, it was Jessica Alvarez pitching for the Lady Owls. Alvarez was solid, as she gave up only one run, while striking out three batters in five innings of work, but it wasn't enough as late errors buried the Lady Owls again.
With the game tied at one a piece in the top of the seventh. Citrus allowed six runs (five unearned), to see Golden West jump out to a commanding 7-1 lead going into the bottom of the 7th. Citrus scored two-runs, but fell short in the end, ending their season with a 7-3 loss.
With the losses the Lady Owls overall record fell to 36-12. While the season may have ended on a sour note, it was still a record setting season for the 2007 Citrus College softball team. The Lady Owls set the record for most regular season wins (35), moved head coach Jackie Boxley into the top spot as the all-time winningest softball coach in Citrus history, and Corinne Milligan's 26 victories ties the Citrus record for most wins in a season by a pitcher.
