Milligan Becomes 1st 20 Game Winner in 5 Years

Glendora, CA(Softball) – Two big innings, and 7 innings of solid pitching and defense. That’s all it took for the Lady Owls to win their 5th Western States Conference game in a row and their 10th out of their last 11. The Lady Owls got big hits in the 1st and 6th inning, and 7 innings of 3 hit ball from Corinne Milligan to get the 4-0 win over Glendale Tuesday afternoon. With the win Milligan becomes the first 20 win Citrus pitcher in 5 years.

Freshman Melanie HansenThe Lady Owls got things rolling in the bottom of the 1st inning when Caitlin Tolan ripped a single to start things off on Glendale’s very first pitch. The very next batter, Denise Hernandez, came to the dish and smoked a double to the left-center fence to drive in Tolan for the first run of the day. Hernandez then stole third, and scored on an error by the third baseman to put the Lady Owls up 2-0 at the end of the 1st inning.

While the offense came through, it was the defense and pitching that was especially stellar. Milligan was perfect through three and two-thirds innings, only giving up 3 hits in her complete game win. Milligan also struck out 11 batters to get her 20th win of the year and her 37th win of her two-year career at Citrus College. The Lady Owls also had a flawless outing in the field with no recorded errors.

The Lady Owls would get on the board one more time in the bottom of the 6th inning. Milligan got on base with a single to center-field. After Jessica Alvarez popped out to the short-stop, Melanie Hansen stepped up to the plate and hit a deep home-run to left-center field, giving the Owls their 4-0 lead.

With the win the Lady Owls improve to 29-9 overall and 17-3 in Western States Conference play. Milligan’s record moves to 20-6 on the season. The Lady Owls will be on the road Thursday for a double-header with LA Valley before playing 3 of their final 4 games at home. The first game of the double-header kicks off at 1:00 PM.
