Lancaster, CA (Softball) -- The 2008 Citrus College softball season came to a close on Sunday afternoon, as the Lady Owls were swept out of the Southern California regional round of playoffs with a 0-8 loss to Antelope Valley. After being held to just one hit yesterday, Citrus was able to muster four today, but was still held scoreless to end their playoff hopes.
While it took five innings for Citrus to get a hit yesterday, it took just one today, as Desiree Perez led off the top of the first with a single to through the left side of the field. Perez never got past first though as Melanie Hansen struck out and Cassie Ward popped out to the second baseman to end the inning.
With Citrus coming up short in the top of the inning, Antelope Valley had no such problems, with three earned runs, including a two-run bomb by Felicia Shepler in the bottom of the first. Citrus would come back in the second with another base runner, but no Lady Owl made it past second base for the entirety of the game.
As Citrus struggled to move over its runners, the Marauders continued to play with an offensive precision that will continue to serve it well as it proceeds through the playoffs. Antelope Valley grabbed two more runs in the second (both unearned), two in the third, and their final run in the fourth, as they run-ruled Citrus for the second consecutive game.
With today’s loss Citrus’ 2008 record falls to 28-18 overall. Though their season ends prematurely, the Lady Owls have nothing to hang their heads about. The Lady Owls won 20 plus games for the third straight year, made their third straight post-season appearance, and helped Head Coach Jackie Boxley pick up her 100th win.
