Azusa, CA (Softball) – The Citrus College softball team, ranked #15 in the State, overcame five errors to pick up a 3-1 non-conference win over nearby Pasadena City College on Friday afternoon. It was Citrus’ fourth win in its past five games, as the Lady Owls collected five hits in the victory.
Although Citrus ended up on top, it would be the Lancers who got on the board first. With runners on the corners and just two outs, Pasadena used a double steal, to catch the Lady Owls off guard. It worked, as Citrus tried to throw out the runner at second. Citrus pitcher Brittany Patterson tried to cut off the throw, but it glanced off her glove and both runners reached second and home safely, giving the Lancers a 1-0 lead in the top of the third.
Trailing by a run, the Lady Owls answered in the bottom of the third, scoring two runs. The first came off the bat of Lauren Pulley, who rapped a single to right field that scored Desiree Perez from second base. A stolen base and a batter later, Pulley scored off an error by the Lancer’s first baseman, giving Citrus a 2-1 lead. Citrus would add to their lead one inning later, as Ashley Rollice sent a line-drive single to center field scoring Courtney Mihm and leaving the Lady Owls with a 3-1 advantage.
Patterson would pitch four strong innings, giving up just two hits, and would give way to sophomore Alex Arguelles who took over the circle for Citrus in the top of the fifth. Arguelles quickly retired the first two batters, but ran into a bit of trouble as she found herself with bases loaded just three batters later. Arguelles got the next batter to fly out, as she squelched Pasadena’s best chance for a comeback.
In the victory Patterson improved her record to 12-10 overall, while Arguelles picked up her first save of the season with three shut-out innings of work. With the win Citrus runs their record to 21-11 overall. The Lady Owls will get back to WSC Blue Division play next Tuesday, April 1st for a double-header at Glendale College. The first game is schedule for a 1:00 PM start.
