Azusa, CA (Women’s Basketball) – The Citrus College softball team picked up its first back to back wins of the season, as it followed Saturday night’s 5-2 victory over LA Valley, with a 10-1 mercy rule win over Moorpark College. The Lady Owls recorded a season high 15 hits over six innings in Tuesday afternoon’s win.
Citrus wasted no time in getting their offense jump started. After Moorpark rapped home an earned run in the top of the second, the Lady Owls answered with four of their own in the bottom of the same inning.
With a runner on first base and one out, freshman Ashley Rollice kick started things with a single that scored Christina Skelton from second base. After Denise Hernandez sacrificed Rollice to second base, sophomore Jen Anaya continued the hitting trend with another single, putting runners on first and third.
With two outs and runners on the corners freshman out-fielder Lauren Pulley stepped in the batters box and ripped a double up the left field line scoring Anaya and Rollice. Sophomore Kym Abayan would round things out by following up Pulley’s hit with a single of her own that scored Pulley, and gave Citrus a 4-1 lead going into the third.
While Citrus’ offense was having its best day of the season, its defense continued its stellar play. After freshman Nicole Molina pitched the first inning and faced two batters in the second, sophomore Brittany Patterson took over pitching five strong innings and picking up her second win of the season. Patterson allowed just two hits and no runs with one strike-out, while the Citrus defense was solid earning no errors in the victory.
With the defense on lock down, the Owls offense continued its excellent play throughout the game. The Lady Owls would pick up a run each, in the fourth and fifth innings, and exploded again in the bottom of the sixth.
Freshman Cassie Ward would lead off the sixth inning rally with a single to right field, followed by another base knock to left field this time from Melissa Salas. With no outs and runners at first and second, Rollice picked up her second hit of the day with a single that drove in Ward and Salas. Sophomore Denise Hernandez would back that up with the Lady Owls’ fourth single of the inning, and Sophomore Jen Anaya finished the game with a bases clearing triple to left field ending the game for both squads.
In the win, Citrus had five players collect at least two hits a piece, including Rollice and Lauren Pulley who both went 2 for 3 with 3 RBI’s each. With the win, Citrus improves to 3-5 on the season, and 1-0 in WSC play. The Lady Owls will hit the road this weekend for the second conference match-up the season with Ventura. First pitch is set for 2:30 PM.
