Glendora, CA (Softball) -- The Citrus College softball team made their long awaited debut at their brand new on-campus softball complex on Thursday afternoon. The Lady Owls hosted Oxnard College and got things off on the right foot picking up a 6-4 victory.
The Lady Owls wasted little time putting runs on the scoreboard taking an early 2-0 lead in the first inning when freshman Vivian Serna launched a two run home-run over the left field fence. Citrus would get another run before the inning was up when Courtney Mihm’s single to centerfield scored Maura Aguilar.
Things didn’t get much better for Oxnard in the second inning as Citrus added two more runs thanks to a pair of doubles from Valerie Torres and Serna. The Lady Owls would record their sixth and final run in the fourth to take a commanding 6-0 lead.
That’s when things began to fall apart for Citrus. Going into the top of the sixth inning, starter Kelly Martin had surrendered just three hits. That changed in the sixth when Carissa Meza’s two run home-run got the Condors on the board.
Oxnard would continue the momentum their offense picked up in the sixth with another two run home-run in the seventh, this time off the bat of Vanessa Flores. With no outs in the top of the seventh Citrus’ six run lead had been cut to two.
After that Martin settled down and got three outs in the next four batters preserving her sixth victory of the season. Freshman Serna would have the best line of the day going 2 for 2 with 3 RBI’s.
With the win, Citrus improves to 7-4 overall and 2-3 in Western State Conference play. The Lady Owls, who have played four games in the last four days, while play their fifth and final game of the week tomorrow, when they travel North to take on Cuesta College. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 PM.
