Hitting On All Cylinders

Glendora, CA (Softball) -- The Citrus College softball team snapped a four game skid on Thursday afternoon sweeping visiting Glendale College 11-4 and 7-1. The Lady Owls rapped 21 hits in the two games, including a season high 15 in the first contest.

Despite Citrus’ offensive dominance throughout the day, it would be Glendale who would get on the board first scoring the first run of the day in the top of the first inning thanks to a Jessica Winnie sacrifice fly to left field.

Citrus quickly responded however, following up Amanda Hererra’s lead-off double with back to back RBI doubles off the bats of Cassie Ward and Vivian Serna. Serna would score two batters later after a failed pick off attempt by the Vaqueros led to Citrus taking a 3-1 lead.

The Lady Owls continued to pour it on in the second with three more runs, one thanks to an RBI single to center field from Herrera. Sophomore Kelly Martin would help the cause an inning later with a two RBI double to right center field, that gave the Owls a healthy 8-1 lead.

Glendale would come back in the fourth with a three-run bomb over the right-center field fence to make it a four run game, but the Lady Owls’ offense was relentless scoring two more in the fourth and then putting the icing on the cake with their 11th run of the game in the fifth, this time compliments of an RBI triple by Courtney Mihm.

After cruising to a seven run victory in the first game, the Lady Owls wasted little time in the second, as Cassie Ward’s 3-run home-run over the right field fence gave Citrus an early 3-0 lead. Freshman Valerie Torres would add to that total a few batters later, scoring on a Glendale error giving Citrus a four run advantage in the first.

The bats continued to stay alive in the second when Citrus got another 3-run jack, only this time it came from freshman Maura Aguilar who crushed a pitch over the left-center field fence.

With a big lead at her back, sophomore starter Kelly Martin pitched a near perfect game, surrendering just three hits and striking out three batters along the way. Martin’s lone slip-up came in the fourth inning when she gave up a solo home-run, the only run given up by Martin for the game. For her efforts, Martin picked up her 14th win of the season.

With the pair of victories, Citrus improves to 18-15 overall and 11-7 in WSC Blue Division play, while Glendale fell to 9-22 overall and 4-13 in conference play.
