Mihm’s The Word

Glendora, CA (Softball) -- After getting one-hit against Fullerton College on Thursday afternoon the Citrus College softball team came back with a vengeance in Saturday’s home hosted double-header with Orange Coast College. The Lady Owls recorded 22 hits between the two games, with sophomore Courtney Mihm leading the way going 4 for 6 with 4 RBI’s in Citrus’ 7-6 and 8-4 wins.

Citrus wasted little time in jumping out to an early lead in game number one, using a pair of back to back RBI singles from Cassie Ward and Valerie Torres to jump out to an early 3-0 lead.

Orange Coast came back with a solo home-run from off the bat of Candice Arevalo in the second inning, and even took the lead in the fourth when Arevalo struck again this time with a three-run shot to give the Pirates a 4-3 lead.

That lead would prove to be short lived however as Mihm’s two RBI double left-center in the next inning gave Citrus back a 5-4 lead. In what proved to be a back and forth affair, Orange Coast tied the game back up in the very next inning with an RBI fielders choice from Nicole Silva.

With the game knotted up at five runs a piece, Citrus came back in the bottom of the fifth and retook the lead when Melissa Salas hit an infield RBI single to make the score 6-5. The Lady Owls would hold onto the lead through the sixth inning, but the Pirates refused to go away scoring on a wild pitch in the top of the seventh to tie the game up at 6-6.

That all came to an end in the bottom of the seventh inning when Tiffany Alvarez’s single through the left side of the field scored Valerie Torres to give Citrus a 7-6 victory in game one.

Game two wouldn’t prove to be as close as Citrus once again jumped out to an early lead, this time scoring two runs in the first inning thanks to another pair of RBI single’s from Vivian Serna and Jessica Corrales.

The Lady Owls added three more in the second and two more into the third to jump out to a commanding 7-1 lead after three innings. Orange Coast would add a run in the fifth, but Citrus came back with a run of their own taking an 8-2 advantage after five.

In the sixth, Orange Coast’s Arevalo (who tortured the Citrus pitching staff all day long), hit her third home-run of the day, this time a two run shot that that cut the Citrus lead in half, but that would be as close as the Pirates would get, as the Lady Owls settled in for an 8-4 victory.

With the win, Citrus improves to 23-18 overall, while Orange Coast falls to 6-24. The Lady Owls will get back to their remaining WSC schedule on Thursday when they travel to LA Valley for a double-header. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
