Slow Going

Azusa, CA (Softball) -- The Citrus College softball team corralled eight hits over seven innings, but never mustered a run in a 0-4 loss to LA Pierce on Tuesday afternoon. The Lady Owls had numerous opportunities to cash in on those hits, but never quite came through as they dropped to 1-3 in conference play.

Freshman Maura AguilarBoth teams got off to a slow start with neither threatening in the first three innings. Things began to turn around for Pierce in the top of the fourth when an Emily Saunders single to right field score two runs and gave Pierce a 2-0 lead.

With the Brahmas taking an early lead, Citrus turned around and tried to come back with an answer in the bottom of the fourth, finding themselves with bases loaded and just one out. Citrus couldn’t get a run in though, as Kelly Martin struck out and Melissa Salas popped up to the short-stop to end the threat.

That would be Citrus’ best chance, all though the Lady Owls did have runners in scoring position in the fifth and sixth innings. Pierce would pile on two more in the top of seventh, as Citrus lost its second in three games.

Freshman Amanda Jauregui would get credited with loss, her record falling to 1-3 on the season. The lone bright spots on offense would come from the bats of Maura Aguilar and Tiffany Alvarez. Aguilar was 2 for 3, while Alvarez went 3 for 3.

With the loss, Citrus’ record falls to 5-4 overall. The Lady Owls will be back out on the diamond tomorrow afternoon when they travel up the 210 to take on Pasadena City College. First pitch is set for 3:00 PM.
