Glendora, CA (Softball) -- The defending State Champion Mt. San Antonio College Mounties proved why they are considered to be one of the best teams in the State year in and year out as they hit three home runs in their 10-4 win over host Citrus College. The Lady Owls did their best against the reigning champs, but after a monstrous first inning, they got shut out the rest of the way for their fourth loss of the young season.
Things got off on the right foot for the Lady Owls as they put up a four-spot in the opening inning. Freshman Kristin Breslau led off the inning with a double to right-center field, and two batters later was driven in by freshman Rae Anne Redmon’s single through the right side of the field. With runners on first and third, up came freshman Tamara Robles who sent a moon shot over the left field fence, to give Citrus an early 4-0 lead.
Unfortunately for Citrus, Mt. SAC came roaring back, getting a three run blast of their own in the top of the second, this one off the bat of Eileen Garcia. The Mounties added to their lead with four more unanswered in the top of the third and took a commanding 7-4 lead.
After their outpouring in the first, Citrus’ bats fell mostly silent for the rest of the game. The Lady Owls did have opportunities in the second (runner on third with one out) and the fourth (bases loaded one out), but both times the Lady Owls failed to come through. Mt. SAC would score three more times with back to back home runs in the sixth to put the final tally at 10-4.
With the loss, Citrus falls to 2-4 and Mt. SAC improves to 1-0. Citrus will try and bounce back from Tuesday’s loss as they play host to Pasadena City College (0-2). First pitch is set for 5:00 PM.
