Santa Monica, CA (Swimming) -- The Citrus College men's swim team won its fifth straight WSC Meet, and ran its conference record to 5-0 with a 130-98 win over Santa Monica College on Friday afternoon. The Fighting Owls got consistent performances from their reliable group of swimmers, as it remained tied with Ventura College for first place in the WSC.
The Fighting Owls started off on the right foot with the very first event of the day, as the Smiley brothers, Ken Kalinisan, and Weston Locatell combined to win the 400 Medley Relay by less than a second. Citrus would also get another win in the very next event, when Matthew Glover won the 1000 Freestyle with a time of 11:41.99, eight seconds fast than the second place finisher.
From there it would be two more events until Citrus garnered another first place finish, as Brian Smiley beat out fellow Fighting Owl Miles Deamer by a hundredth of a second in the 50 Yard Freestyle with a time of 23.25. Brian's brother Peter did his part as well, taking first in the 500 Yard Freestyle, with a time of 5:12.12, forty seconds faster than the second place finisher.
Helping round out Citrus' fifth straight conference victory was Weston Locatell, who took first in the 200 Yard Fly (1:58.93), and the foursome of Glover, Deamer, Jakob Zawolkow, and Ahmed Elsherif, who took first in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay, beating out Santa Monica by a hundredth of a second with a time of 3.45.31.
The Fighting Owls will put their perfect record on the line, this Wednesday as they face the only other undefeated squad Ventura College here at home. The first event is set for 2:30 PM.
