Mission Viejo, CA (Swimming & Diving) -- The Citrus College swim and dive teams kicked off day one at the 2008 CCCAA State Championships yesterday. The Fighting Owls fared well at Saddleback College picking up two top ten performances in the four events they participated in.
Citrus kicked off the day with the Men's 200 Yard Freestyle Relays. Brian Smiley, Peter Smiley, Ken Kalinisan, and Weston Locatell all teamed together to take 16th place with a time of 1:29.78. Only seven-tenths of a second separated Citrus from the 11th place team in what was a hotly contested race.
From there the Fighting Owls moved on to the Men's 200 Yard Individual Medley race. Freshman Weston Locatell represented Citrus in the race taking 13th place with a time of 2:00.22, less than a tenth of a second behind the 12th place finisher.
Citrus would wrap things up on the men's side with the 400 Yard Medley Relay. The same four swimmers who swam in the freestyle relay all participated in the event, and garnered their strongest finish of the day with a 10th place finish and a time of 3:38.11.
While the men participated in three first day events, Citrus lone representative in the state championships on the women's side was diver Lisa Mooney who competed in the 1 Meter Championships yesterday afternoon. Mooney, who was seeded 4th in the after her performance at the SoCal Championships two weeks ago, finished ninth improving up her SoCal score by 13 points with a finals score of 147.80.
With day one in the books, the men's team sits in 15th place in the team competition with 20 points, while the women are in 22nd with Mooney's 9 points. Citrus will be competing in three different events today, with Locatell and Kalinisan swimming the 100 Yard Butterfly, Kalinisan swimming the 100 Yard Breaststroke, and Mooney competing in the 3 Meter Dive.
