Moorpark, CA (Track and Field) -- The Citrus College Track and Field program kicked off their 2008 season with an impressive showing at the Western State Conference meet hosted by Moorpark College on Friday afternoon. The Fighting Owls placed in the top four in the various events a whopping 15 times.
On the men's side, Tony Davis had a great day at the track. Davis finished 2nd in the 100 Meter Dash with a time of 11.82 second, just three-tenths of a second off the first place finisher's time. Davis also placed third in the 200 Meter Dash (23.93 seconds), and took part in the 4x100 Meter Relay team that took second. Also on that team was James Stewart who posted impressive times of his own, with a 2nd place finish in the 400 Meter Dash (51.60 seconds), and fourth place finish in the 200 Meter Dash (24.04 seconds).
For the women, sophomore Christina Soto posted the best finish of the day on either the men or women's side. Soto took first place in the 3000 Meter Run with a time of 12:04.23, a full 19 seconds faster than the second place finisher. Cynthia Acedo also finished with a strong showing, taking 2nd in the 400 Meter Dash (1:04.93), while teammate Julia Manzo finished third in the 400 Meter Hurdles with a time of 1:18.99.
While the track side was having a strong showing, Citrus' bread and butter last year, the field events, was picking up right where they left off. Freshman Ashleigh Stover got off to a promising start by taking second in the Hammer Throw and fifth in the Javelin Throw. While Stover looked promising across the board, freshman Jennifer Lawrence burst out of the gates, taking first place in the Javelin Throw with a distance of 27.08 meters, a full two meters further than the second place thrower.
Citrus will continue its season next weekend as it takes part in the two day Cerritos Invitational. The meet begins on Friday with a 4:00 PM start.
