Field Day

Valley Glen, CA (Track & Field) -- The Citrus College Track & Field team took some positive steps on Friday afternoon, as both the men’s and women’s teams scored their highest point totals of the season. The majority of those points would come from the field events, as the women finished third in the four team event with 10 points, and the men fourth with 24.

Cynthia AcedoSophomore Evan D’Oyen would put together the strongest day of any Citrus athlete. D’Oyen cleaned up in the throws events taking first in the Hammer (127’ 4”), 4th in the Shot Put (35’ 2”), and first again in the Discus (150’ 8”).

D’Oyen was joined by three other Fighting Owls in the Discus, as Johnnie Chatman (3rd – 108’ 2”), Sean Cookmeyer (4th – 100’ 1”), and Gerardo Cruz (5th – 98’ 7”) all finished in the top 5 in that event. Chatman also added a 3rd place finish in the Hammer with a throw of 94 feet 1 inch.

The only other Fighting Owl male competitors to score would be Joseph Bennett and Christopher Pope in the High Jump. Pope won the event out-right with a jump of 6 feet 6 inches, while Bennett finished in a three-way tie for second with a jump of 6 feet.

On the women’s side Nicole Diaz would lead the way taking 3rd in the Discus (86’ 1”) and 4th in the Hammer (86’ 3’). Fellow sophomore Ashleigh Stover also had a strong showing in the Hammer taking second with a throw of 93 feet 5 inches. Citrus’ only other score came from Cynthia Acedo, who finished 3rd in the 400 Meter Dash (1:01.59).

The Fighting Owls will take the next few weeks off of conference competition and instead will head North to take part in the Bakersfield Relays next weekend. Events are scheduled to begin at 8:00 AM on Friday and Saturday.
