Volleyball -- The 2006 Citrus College Volleyball team has been posting some of their most impressive victories in their history since the beginning of their young season, but their toughest match-up came tonight when Irvine Valley College came calling. The Lasers are a deceiving 3-2, and have lots of experience on their squad. The Owls are no slouches themselves boasting All-American candidate Kelly Fink and company.
In the first game it was back and forth throughout the match. The Owls never trailed but Irvine Valley kept it real close. In the end the Owls clawed their way to the front winning 30-28. The second game featured much of the same with a different outcome. The Owls led most of the game included being up by as much as 6 points at 16-10. The Lasers never gave up however, and battled back into the game taking the lead over at 16-27. Tracy Lofgren would pull the Owls even at 27, but the Laser’s struck again. Lucero Vargas pulled the Owls even one more time at 28, but the Lasers got a kill from Lauren Miller putting them up 28-29, and on the ensuing serve Kelly Keating got the ace off a Tracy Lofgren receiving error.
After splitting the first two games, the Owls settled down jumping out to a quick 10-4 lead. The Lasers would climb back in the game and would tie it up at 12-12. From there however it became all Owls as they cruised to a 30-19 win. The 4th game found both teams battling back and forth early in the set. They were both even at 5 when the Owls when on a 4 point tear capped off Lauren Bjorklund kill putting them up 9-5. The Owls would never look back or relinquish the lead again going on to win the game 30-22, and the match 3-1.
In the win the Owls were led by Kelly Fink who had 23 kills and 21 digs. Lucero Vargas was 2nd with 15 kills, while Tracy Lofgren was second with 18 digs. Jennifer Washington, the WSC leader in blocks, was awesome once again on the net tallying 6.5 blocks on the evening. Kelly Fink and Lauren Bjorklund were right behind her with 3.5 and 3 respectively.
With the win the Owls improve to 5-1 on the season. The Owls will travel to Ventura next Wednesday September 27, for a 7:00 pm match-up with Ventura College.
